When I first started messing around with WordPress I found that it was positively the best platform for a new or old network marketer to use to house all that great content that we created. But there were still a lot of questions that I had in order to take full advantage of the tools that it provides. One of the many was, What are Pingbacks and should I approve them?
In order to find my answers concerning pingbacks first I had to figure out what they were and why they were part of the WordPress system.
Pingbacks are a method for blog authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their posts on their site. This is useful when you want to see if your content is valuable enough to be shared on other authority sites in your niche. Its also useful if you want to learn if people are taking the content off you site and republishing it to theirs (only works if they are putting a backlink to your site on their site).
Pingbacks work a bit like this. Say that you write a great article on your site about network marketing. I read your article and then comment about it in an article on my site, linking back to your original post. Using pingbacks, my site can automatically notify you that I have linked to your post. Its a great way to tie two pieces of related content together thus increasing the backlinks to both sites.
Pingbacks and Trackbacks are the same thing with a few differences. Primarily is that a pingback does not show content that is on the site. In the case of the example above, the pingback to your site from mine will be just a notification that I did link to your post. Whereas a trackback will include some of the content I put on my site thus allowing you to read a bit of it to see if it interests you or not.
I know its a complicated subject, or you just may be like me and over thinking the whole pingbacks versus trackbacks thing so here is a short video to help explain it a bit more.
Pingbacks are displayed on your WordPress admin panel as comments. If you use a lot of WordPress.com backlinks you probably already get a bit of these. There are some article directories that also use WordPress as the base of their websites. When you post an article on them you will get notified as well.

Now in the picture above you can see that these two particular pingbacks are coming from other blogs. These blogs are part of a blog network and I know that they are excerpts of my post with a simple keyword optimized anchor text. So they are good for my site.
Now comes the answer to the above question about pingbacks. You see as they show in your admin panel as comments you have to make the decision as to whether or not you should approve them. In the case of the two above I would not approve them. The reason is two fold. One, know what those posts are. Simple generated content created for the sole purpose of creating a backlink to my site. The second reason is more cosmetic.
Some themes show your pingbacks as comments on your site. So your visitor might see those ugly things on your post page and who really wants that. The particular theme on this site doesn’t display them, but some do.
There is a third and most important reason I don’t approve all my pingbacks. You see those two sites up there. They are brand new blogs. They don’t have any PageRank, no domain age, and other than the backlinks I create for them there really isn’t anything of great value to them. Whereas my site however contains the original content to which those two are pointing to. So instead of approving pingbacks on my site and giving those two sites a backlink I just choose to trash them.
There are some cases however when you want to approve them. Remember the example above where the two authors created individual unique content about a subject. Well guess what, those are the types of pingbacks you need to approve. If you are the original creator of a concept or idea that is presented on the other site then have a link back to other content is beneficial to you. It helps increase your trust level with your readers because a third party identified you as a subject matter expert.
So all in all pingbacks are a good thing as long as you take the time to monitor the one’s you chose to approve. And if you thinking about turning them off all together I highly recommend against it. In these days of Post-Panda updates the quality of your backlinks is almost as important as the quality of your content. You want to know who is linking to your site to protects its reputation in the search engines. So enable your pingbacks and take the few extra minutes to protect your site.
